Start a conversation

How we work

A clear process, at your family’s pace.

We organize the facts, put decisions in the right order and bring in the right licensed professional early. You stay in charge the whole way.

How we begin

It starts with a conversation

We work based on relationships. Everything starts with a conversation, not with the clock running. We begin with a phone call to get to know you and understand your objectives, whether the decisions are yours or your parents’. From there, you decide whether and how we work together.

Once you engage, your first working meeting is:

  • In person in the East BayWe’re based here, so local clients meet face to face.
  • By Zoom or video elsewhereClients outside the area meet with us by video.

Your trusted person

Someone you trust, in the room

We ask each client to choose a trusted family member or friend, who can live nearby or in another city or state. They're welcome to join our meetings, in person or by video, but they don't need to attend every one. We also plan periodic update calls with you to keep your trusted person informed on key decisions and information. That person can also keep a second copy of key information, so it never rests with just one person, or with us. Helping families in different places stay coordinated is a key part of what we do.

You choose who it is and what they see.

Our guardrails

You stay in control.

Everything we do starts with you feeling comfortable. These promises guide every conversation.

  • 1You decide what we coverOnly the topics you want, at your pace.
  • 2You choose your trusted personYou name a trusted family member or friend to stay informed, and decide what they see and how much.
  • 3You make every decisionWe never push you to give things up or do what you don’t want. We help you decide based on your own priorities.
  • 4We never hold the keysNo passwords. No control of your documents. No account access.

Sharing stays between you and your trusted person. If you choose to share access to an account, you share it with them directly. PRFA never holds passwords, controls documents or accesses accounts.

Comfort first: Green, Yellow, Red

Each color is about how you feel about a topic, not the topic itself.

GreenReady to dive in

You want to talk about it.

We dig in together.

YellowHandle with care

Important, but sensitive.

We go gently. You decide what’s shared.

RedNot now

You’d rather not get into it.

We respect that and never push.

The same subject can be any color. Money might be Green for one family and Red for another, and you can change a color any time.

Nothing is forced. And nothing is forgotten: we keep your list for whenever you’re ready.

Get Organized

$300

  • Together, we review your accounts of every type (bank, investment, retirement, insurance and bills), so you have a clear picture of what you have and where.
  • We go through your online accounts. We work alongside you on a secure account setup or password update. Some clients use a password manager app, which keeps passwords safely on their own device and makes it easy to share access with their trusted person. Only you, and family members you choose, ever have access to your passwords; we never hold or see them.
  • We go through your insurance policies and gather the contact information in one place.
  • We build a simple contact list of your key professionals: CPA, attorney, advisor and doctors.
  • We note where your important documents are kept.

Includes a first working meeting, in person in the East Bay or by video.

We finish with a short list of priorities and possible next projects that we identify together.

After Get Organized

Project work

Priced by project

Specific projects that arise from the needs we identify with you during Get Organized. Each one is priced on a project-specific basis and agreed with you before any work begins.

For example:

  • Preparing for a meeting with your attorney or CPA
  • Organizing a move or a housing decision
  • Coordinating a family conversation

More involved projects:

  • Your home now, and a possible move to assisted living later. We help you map out your options, timing and likely costs, so you can decide what fits and when, with your family included.
  • Paying for long-term care. Medicare generally doesn't cover long-term custodial care. We help you organize your long-term care insurance, Medicare and other coverage, and gather what's needed to look into other sources, such as Medi-Cal or veterans benefits. If you don't already have the right help, we can introduce you to elder law attorneys, licensed insurance professionals and nonprofit counseling programs we know.
  • Passing your home to family. We help you and your family think through living arrangements and future care needs, organize the facts, and work alongside your attorney and CPA. If you need one, we can introduce you to professionals we've worked with.

We know licensed professionals and nonprofit programs who do this work. You choose who to hire, and you pay them directly; we never accept referral fees.

Everything still starts with a conversation, not with the clock running. You decide whether and how we work together.
